Taiwan has sufficient solar resource. Especially in the south Taiwan, there is full of sunny weather more than 9 months of a year. According to a report from Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), a normal solar cell can generate power around 900~1,000 watts in Japan and Germany, but the same solar cell can generate power up to 1,500 watts in the south Taiwan. In short, the solar resource in the south Taiwan is 50% higher than Japan and Germany.

According to a conclusion from the Second National Energy Conference, there is a renewable energy proportion which has to achieve 10% by 2010. Solar energy is one of main aspects within developing renewable energy in Taiwan. In fact, Taiwanese government and civil industry have successfully been developing in the field of solar. For example, Motech Industries, Inc. is one of four solar cell manufacturing companies in Taiwan, and has become one of Top 10 solar cell manufacturing companies in the world so far. In addition, Taiwanese government has announced ‘Popularization and Reward of Application Solar Energy in Hot Water Systems’ and ‘Subsidy of Making Demonstration System of Solar Photoelectric Generators’ since 2000. By the end of 2005, Taiwan had around 350 thousand households and accumulated the area around 1,420 thousand square meters to install solar water heaters. Taiwan has occupied the 10th in the world in use of solar water heaters, and saves the household fuel gas nearly 70,000 tons per year. Besides, to analyze the installed solar water heater area from the land area of unit, Taiwan is just beyond Israel and Cyprus, and the number 3 in the world. On the other hand, Solar Photoelectric Generators have been estimated to generate 1,000 Kilowatts of solar energy in Taiwan by the end of 2005.
